Flight diversions and cancellations in Tenerife and La Palma due to the ash cloud

The dense ash cloud that is being generated by the volcano in La Palma, is having an effect on flights to Tenerife and La Palma itself today, with diversions and cancellations, and more disruptions are expected in the next 36 hours in La Gomera, according to Pevolca.

According to sources at La Palma airport, airlines have decided to stop operating in La Palma due to the ash cloud, even though AENA has stated that all eight airports in the Canary Islands are operational as normal, although they recommend that travellers check the status of their flights with their airlines.

Regarding the reason for the flight cancellations, the Cabildo de La Palma says that “the island's airport is facing an unfavourable scenario due to the disposition of the ash cloud and the forecast of winds over the next 36 hours."

TENERIFE FLIGHTS:
This afternoon five flights have been diverted from the Tenerife North (Los Rodeos) airport to the Tenerife South (Reina Sofía) International Airport. There are reports from passengers on planes that they were only 15 minutes from landing when they were informed that they were being diverted to the south due to the ash cloud from the La Palma volcano.

Passengers on a Ryanair flight from Madrid this afternoon have been posting on social media that flight crew informed them as they were approaching Los Rodeos that they were being diverted, and that a bus to the north was being laid on for them.

LA GOMERA:
Binter Airlines has reported in the last few minutes that they have cancelled flights NT652 (La Gomera - Tenerife North) and NT653 (Tenerife North - La Gomera) due to suspended ash in the air.

At the time of publication, no flights to or from any other airports have been affected.
