The Spanish State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has activated yellow weather alerts from today (Thursday) in five of the Canary Islands, warning of strong winds, high temperatures, and rough seas. The alerts have been issued for Tenerife, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera and El Hierro.
Island-by-Island Alerts:
Tenerife:
- Coastal Alert: In effect from 8:00pm today, Thursday October 3rd, until at least 8:00am on Friday. The southeast coast will experience northeast winds of 50-61 km/h (Force 7 on the Beaufort scale), creating hazardous conditions offshore.
Gran Canaria:
- Heat Alert: Starting at 8:00pm tonight (Thursday), lasting until 8:00pm on Friday. Maximum temperatures of up to 34°C are expected, particularly in the southern and western regions.
- Coastal Alert: From midnight tonight until 8:00am tomorrow, Friday, northeast winds of 50-61 km/h will affect the east, south, and west coasts, with the strongest winds anticipated in the west and southeast.
La Palma:
- Wind Alert: Active now until Friday at 10:00am. Strong winds, with gusts reaching 70 km/h, will primarily impact the island’s summits and western areas, particularly El Paso and surrounding mid-elevation zones.
La Gomera:
- Wind Alert: Active from midday today, Thursday, until 6:00am tomorrow (Friday). The entire island will be affected, with gusts up to 70 km/h, especially on the summits and northwest and eastern slopes.
El Hierro:
- Coastal Alert: In effect from 8:00pm this evening, Thursday, until 8:00am tomorrow morning (Friday). The northern and northwestern coasts will face strong winds of 50-61 km/h, mainly impacting areas offshore.
AEMET advises residents and visitors to exercise caution, especially near coastal and mountainous areas, as winds and rough seas could pose risks. The Canaries are bracing for challenging weather in the coming days as these conditions sweep across the archipelago.
