The Government of the Canary Islands has declared a pre-alert for adverse coastal conditions across all of the islands, due to forecasts of rough seas and strong winds.
The Directorate General of Emergencies made the announcement in accordance with the Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Phenomena (PEFMA), following information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other official sources.
The pre-alert covers the north and west coasts of El Hierro, La Palma, Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, as well as the northern shores of La Gomera, Tenerife and Gran Canaria.
According to forecasts, sea conditions are expected to worsen, with combined swells reaching 2 to 3 metres, north to north-easterly winds of 20–40 km/h (Force 4–5), and north-westerly groundswells also between 2 and 3 metres.
Public advice and safety recommendations
Authorities are urging both residents and visitors to take extreme caution near the coast during this period. The main recommendations include:
- Observe red flags and avoid swimming, surfing or entering the sea, particularly on beaches exposed to northern or western swells.
- Stay clear of breakwaters, promenades and rocky coastal areas, as large waves can appear suddenly and sweep people into the sea.
- Do not fish from rocks or piers, and avoid any activities close to the shoreline.
- Secure small boats and watercraft in ports or safe locations, and avoid sailing unless absolutely necessary.
- Keep vehicles away from low-lying coastal roads or car parks that may flood during high tide.
- Follow updates from official channels such as the Canary Islands Government, AEMET, and local councils, and heed any beach closures or safety warnings issued by lifeguards or emergency services.
The Directorate emphasises that while this is a preventive alert rather than a full emergency, coastal hazards can develop quickly, particularly in areas known for strong undercurrents and unpredictable wave patterns.
Tourists are reminded to check local advisories before visiting beaches or engaging in water-based activities and to prioritise safety over recreation during the alert period.
