A ‘cayuco’ surprised tourists this morning (Thursday) when it arrived at a beach in Las Galletas in the south of Tenerife with 41 people on board, including one teenager, all male sub-Saharans who had crossed the Atlantic from the west coast of Africa.
As you can see in the video, the boat got here by its own means shortly after 11:00am, and members of the Red Cross were there to meet it assisted by the Guardia Civil and Local Police who cordoned off a section of the beach so that medical staff could assess the health of the new arrivals.
Dozens of people who were spending the morning on the beach during the intense heat observed the arrival of the boat, and the intervention of medical personnel and the police forces.
After they had all been assessed, only three people needed to be transferred to the Hospital del Sur for further treatment.
Maritime Rescue mobilized the vessel Salvamar Alpheratz as a preventive measure to intercept the boat, but it reached the coast of Tenerife by its own means so no intervention was necessary.
