Fuerteventura is getting ready to host the 37th edition of the Windsurf and Wingfoil World Championships, the island’s biggest sporting event, which will take place from 18th July to 2nd August on the stunning La Barca beach in Sotavento.

Held in the municipality of Pájara, this prestigious competition has become a landmark on the international sporting calendar, renowned both for its elite level and for boosting Fuerteventura’s profile as a top global tourist destination.

La Barca beach offers exceptional conditions that once again will draw the world’s best windsurf and wingfoil athletes, as well as thousands of fans and specialist media from across the globe.

World titles on the line

According to Nico Prien, president of the Professional Windsurfers Association (PWA), this stage of the world tour will be decisive. Fuerteventura will crown the world champions in two women’s categories: Slalom X and Freestyle. Reigning star Sarah-Quita Offringa will be looking to defend both her titles against the very best in international windsurfing.

Among the men, top competitors like Matteo Iachino and Pierre Monteforte are set to thrill the crowds. The event will also spotlight emerging talent, such as Bonaire’s Bobbi-Lynn De Jong, who at just under 18 will compete head-to-head with the world’s top female riders.

A showcase for water sports and local culture

At the official launch of the championship, the president of the Fuerteventura Cabildo, Lola García, said “Year after year, this event positions us as an international benchmark, attracting the best athletes on the planet and showing the world the beauty of our beaches, the power of the trade winds, and the warmth of our people.”

Pájara’s mayor, Alejandro Jorge, emphasised the event’s unique character, describing it as “the only championship that combines elite sport with leisure activities, both by day and by night, and we have it right here in Pájara.”

With winds that will test even the most experienced and beaches that inspire newcomers, Fuerteventura is once again set to become the epicentre of global windsurfing, perfectly blending sport, tourism and vibrant spectacle in a truly unrivalled natural setting.
