A spectacular sperm whale sighting off the coast of Playa Quemada yesterday morning (Saturday) amazed a group of boaters in the area. The impressive marine mammal appeared close to their vessel, offering a breathtaking encounter that was captured on video.
Lanzarote’s coastal waters are a sanctuary for marine life, particularly cetaceans. Thanks to the island’s nutrient-rich seas and year-round mild temperatures, visitors and residents can often spot various species of whales and dolphins throughout the year.
Autumn, especially October, remains one of the best times for such encounters. Among the species most commonly seen around Lanzarote are short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus), which live in resident family groups and can be observed almost all year round.
The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the largest of the toothed whales, is also known to frequent the southern waters of the island, particularly near the Los Ajaches area, although its appearances are less predictable.
Other species occasionally seen include the majestic fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), one of the largest animals on the planet, which passes through the Canary Islands during migration season.
Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus), common dolphins, and other deep-diving whales are also regular visitors, adding to Lanzarote’s reputation as one of Europe’s top destinations for marine wildlife watching.
