This November was the warmest recorded in the Canary Islands in history

Following record temperatures in October, the Canary Islands experienced its warmest November on record in 2023, with an average temperature of 20 degrees Celsius, 2.2 degrees higher than the usual average, according to data published yesterday (Wednesday) by the State Met Office.

In mainland Spain, the average temperature in November was 11.5 degrees Celsius, making it 2 degrees warmer than normal, which is the second warmest November on record, tied with 2006 and only surpassed by 1983.

The highest temperatures nationally were recorded at Tenerife South Airport, where temperatures reached 33.7 degrees Celsius on the 15th; El Hierro Airport, with 32.4 degrees on the same day; Lanzarote Airport, reached 31.9 degrees on the 13th, and Gran Canaria Airport, where temperatures peaked at 31.6 degrees on the 15th also.

At the same time, November had a normal level of precipitation on the mainland, with a value of 71.1 millimetres, representing 91% of the 1991-2020 period average. However, in the Canary Islands, it was a ‘dry month’, with only 27.2mm of precipitation.

So far, December is also looking as though it will be a month of record highs in the Canary Islands which will make 2023 one of the hottest years on record.
