Exploring the Canary Islands is both a blessing and an adventure. While some may skim through the typical tourist spots, others uncover the hidden gems of these islands. If you have a spirit for adventure, there’s a unique spot that will leave you amazed. To reach it, you'll need good footwear and your own vehicle, as this secret location isn't easily accessible.
Hidden within a secluded cove are a number of cottages, forming a secret haven. Some belong to fishermen, others have been built as weekend retreats by residents, but all in all, the most beautiful place you can visit is Porís de Candelaria on the island of La Palma, located in the municipality of Tijarafe.
Established over a century ago, this small settlement of cave houses, perched 50 metres high, are all painted white, creating a unique and stunning environment. One of the oldest and most intriguing areas of the island, the cave itself forms a silhouette resembling the island of La Palma.
The name "Porís" originates from the rock to which fishermen’s boats were moored. This spot once served as a landing port for goods, despite its challenging accessibility.
Reaching Porís de Candelaria involves more than just the charming fishermen's cottages; it also includes a beautiful cove and beach. Swimming is only advised when the tide is low, as high tide can be dangerous for bathers.
There are two main ways to reach this picturesque hidden village. The first is by car, as public transport cannot access the remote and difficult terrain. The road to the village can be daunting for less confident drivers, with a very steep incline that can be tricky to navigate, especially when going back up on the return trip.
The second and more favoured option is by sea. Departing from Puerto de Tazacorte, this route offers the opportunity to spot whales and dolphins along the way, culminating in a visit to one of the most beautiful villages you will ever see.
Porís de Candelaria offers an unparalleled experience for those with a sense of adventure willing to venture off the beaten track. With its historical charm and natural beauty, it promises to be a highlight of any summer visit to the Canary Islands.
