The Directorate General of Emergencies of the Canary Islands Government has declared a high alert for coastal phenomena in the islands of El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, and the northern coast of Gran Canaria.
According to an official press release, they are warning of "dangerous sea conditions, primarily caused by a storm to the north of the Canary Islands, resulting in a combination of northeast swells that will primarily affect the windward coasts, open to the north and west of all the islands in the archipelago."
The wave height, which is anticipated to reach between 5 and 6 metres in these areas, will pose risks to bathers and lead to red flags on many beaches and bathing areas around the archipelago.
Beachgoers are advised to observe warnings and flags before entering the water.
