The hidden Canarian village that is a gateway to a stunning National Park

There a charming and tranquil village that exists in the Canary Islands, that remains largely unknown to both tourists and ex-pats. Nestled high in the Barranco del Ingenio on the island of La Gomera lies Los Loros, a picturesque hamlet offering a perfect escape into nature.

Los Loros is located in one of the most secluded areas of La Gomera, perched at the foot of the mountains. This tiny settlement, with its origins dating back centuries, was once surrounded by a dense Laurisilva forest before the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors.

The landscape dramatically changed when the sugarcane industry began to flourish, leading to widespread deforestation. Despite this, the area retained its natural beauty, characterised by terraced fields and stately palm trees.

The Hamlet:

With only around 35 buildings, Los Loros is a small cluster of colonial-style houses, many of which have been lovingly restored and converted into holiday homes or rural lodgings. Despite its proximity to popular destinations, Los Loros remains a hidden gem, unknown even to many Canarians.

At the heart of the village stands the modest, centuries-old Ermita del Carmen, a small chapel where locals gather each year on July 23rd to celebrate their patron saint.

Trails Leading to Garajonay National Park:

What truly sets Los Loros apart are its breathtaking hiking trails, which serve as gateways to the nearby Garajonay National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

More adventurous types can embark on the Marichal Forest trail, which ascends towards the enchanting Laguna Grande. Other trails lead to La Meseta, La Cañada de Jorge, or the lush Jardín de Las Creces, each offering a unique perspective of the island's natural splendour.

For those wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life or the crowded beaches of the tourist areas in the Canary Islands, Los Loros provides an idyllic escape where nature, tradition, and tranquillity all meet.
