The Canary Islands register the highest temperatures in all of Spain

The thermometers continue to climb in the first heat wave of summer and are already close to 40 degrees in some parts of the islands. Yesterday, Llano de los Loros, in Tenerife, registered 39.8 degrees at 3:00pm and was ranked as the hottest point in Spain, ahead of Andújar, Jaén (39.7°C); Badajoz, (39.1°C); Córdoba Airport, (39.0°C) and Mérida, Badajoz (39.0°C).

The Las Tirajanas weather station in Gran Canaria was next on the list, in sixth position in the table, with temperatures of 38.9 degrees, according to data from the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET), who activated a red weather warning for extreme temperatures on Monday.

It seems that nowhere has been immune from the heat as temperatures above 37.5°C were registered at the Teror weather station in Gran Canaria, at Los Rodeos Airport, in Tenerife, and in El Paso in La Palma.

AEMET weather warnings are still active for high temperatures throughout the Canary Islands, with orange alerts in the east, south, and west of Gran Canaria, and yellow alerts in all areas of the rest of the islands.

The Ministry of Health has also issued a red warning for health risks for the next two days in Agüimes, Mogán, San Bartolomé de Tirajana, Santa Lucía de Tirajana, and Aldea de San Nicolás, in Gran Canaria, and an orange notice, in Artenara, Ingenio, Santa Brígida, Tejeda, Telde, Valsequillo, and Vega de la Vega de San Mateo.

From today, Thursday, the entry of an air mass from the north is expected to produce a drop in temperatures, but what won’t improve, in principle, is the quality of the air. The wind is also expected to bring with it smoke and ash from the fires that are taking place on the other side of the Atlantic, 10,000kms away in Canada. This smoke is expected to mix with the Saharan dust and enter through the north of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura.
