The Canary Islands launches €100,000 internship program for young adults

The Canary Islands Government is rolling out a new initiative to help young people gain essential work experience, through the Canary Islands Employment Service (SCE). The Ministry of Tourism and Employment has unveiled the "Practícate" internship program, which offers €100,000 in grants.

The program is designed for young people aged 18 to 25 who hold a university degree, vocational training, or a professional certificate. It's open to businesses, self-employed individuals, and organisations.

Jéssica de León, the Regional Minister of Tourism and Employment, explained that the goal is to help young people overcome the challenge of gaining work experience, a key barrier when entering the job market. She highlighted that this initiative benefits both young people, who can apply their learned skills in real-world settings, and companies, which can discover new talent to strengthen their teams.

María Teresa Ortega, director of the SCE, added that participants need to be unemployed and registered with the Canary Islands Employment Service when they are pre-selected. The program also extends to those under 30 who are part of the National Youth Guarantee System and on the single applicant list.

Internships will be conducted at the workplaces of the participating entities, with guidance from a tutor. They will last between three to six months, requiring a six-hour daily commitment. Participants will receive a financial grant equivalent to 120% of the current monthly IPREM (Spanish Pension Fund), set at €600 for 2025, with a minimum grant of €720 per month.

Applications are open in five periods: the first runs until March 31st, the second from April 1st to May 31st, the third from June 1st to July 31st, the fourth from August 1st to September 30th, and the fifth from October 1st to November 30th.
