The Canary Islands are on orange weather warning as storm Celia arrives

Storm Celia which is affecting mainland Europe will also be felt in the Canary Islands this week with rain, wind, and rough seas. AEMET forecasts that after the passage of the last Atlantic front, which caused the bad sea conditions over the weekend, a new storm is coming which will bring bad weather this week.

It is expected that the islands will be most affected today (Monday) and tomorrow with strong rain in the north of the islands, very strong winds and bad sea conditions in all areas, and possible snow in Tenerife and La Palma.

The AEMET weather warnings have now been increased from yellow to orange, particularly for strong winds and rough seas in all areas, and people are advised NOT to go into the water.

This weekend four people were killed in separate incidents in the islands, the most tragic weekend for 15 years. According to the Emergency Services, most of these accidents happen in natural pools and rocky areas which end up becoming "a death trap", and in 85% of cases are unattended and have a red flag.

They explained that when large waves like yesterdays, which were up to six metres high, come towards the coast they raise the water level in these pools and then its undercurrent drags everything out to sea, including people. Then as people try to swim against the current, they run out of strength, and in most cases sink and then drown.

This is why they advise not swimming in these conditions, even in areas that look safe to do so.
