The Canary Islands Government has activated a pre-alert for high temperatures in Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria as another spell of intense heat hits the islands.

The measure, declared by the Directorate General of Emergencies, came into force yesterday (Tuesday) and follows the latest meteorological information available to the authorities.

The pre-alert is being implemented under the Canary Islands' emergency plan for adverse weather events (PEFMA).

Fuerteventura is already under a yellow weather warning for high temperatures today, with temperatures around 34°C expected in parts of the island.

Conditions are forecast to become more intense today, Wednesday, when AEMET's yellow warnings will also cover Lanzarote and eastern, southern and western areas of Gran Canaria.

Temperatures could locally reach 37°C in the hottest parts of the three islands.

In Gran Canaria, the highest temperatures are expected particularly in southern and western areas, while Lanzarote could also see locally very high temperatures in the south. Southern areas of Fuerteventura are expected to experience some of the hottest conditions there.

The renewed heat comes only days after the previous Canary Islands high-temperature pre-alert ended, following another spell of unusually hot September weather.

Calima is also affecting the islands, with suspended dust contributing to hazy conditions in some areas.

Authorities are advising people to protect themselves from the heat, avoid prolonged physical activity during the hottest part of the day and spend as much time as possible in cooler or shaded places.

People should drink plenty of fluids and particular attention should be paid to older people, those who are unwell and anyone especially vulnerable to high temperatures.

The latest emergency declaration currently applies specifically to Lanzarote, Fuerteventura and Gran Canaria, with authorities continuing to monitor the developing weather conditions.
