The Canary Islands will continue with its progressive de-escalation and will continue to relax or lift restrictions with the aim that we have “the minimum possible restrictions in the shortest possible time”, with the high probability there will be new decisions in the Governing Council next week, as stated yesterday (Friday) by the director of the Canary Islands Health Service (SCS), Conrado Dominguez.
Dominguez supported the fact that none of the islands dropped level this Thursday due to the healthcare pressure indicators with Covid patients, both in terms of occupation of conventional beds and ICU beds, and at the same time, lowering the restrictions on hours and capacity associated with each level, because the incidence of coronavirus infections continues to fall, and the Canary Islands now have one of the lowest in the entire country.
The director of the SCS defended the prudent de-escalation policy adopted by the Canarian Government in managing the pandemic, in the face of decisions by other regional governments, such as that of the Basque Country, which on Thursday decided to suddenly lift all local Covid restrictions.
This means that the Basque Country only now has the measures adopted by the Inter-territorial Health Council at a national level, such as the use of masks indoors, social distancing, and capacities in sports venues.
Meanwhile, the Canary Islands registered 1,136 new cases of Covid and seven deaths yesterday, and over 1,500 people have now lost their lives since the beginning of the pandemic.
