Rain and strong winds have returned to Gran Canaria today, Wednesday, causing small streams of water to form in some streets, briefly flooding parts of the roads, and making it difficult for pedestrians to get around this morning.

Following the intense impact of Storm Emilia at the weekend, which left scenes of disruption across the capital (Las Palmas) due to heavy rain and powerful winds, the island is once again dealing with unstable conditions.

Persistent rainfall swept through the city during the morning hours, reminding residents that the stormy spell is not yet over.

Meteorologists say the ongoing instability is being driven by a series of atmospheric troughs affecting the Canary Islands. These troughs are areas of low pressure at higher levels of the atmosphere, linked to colder and more unstable air. Their continued presence is preventing the weather from settling, encouraging cloud formation, rainfall and gusty winds across the archipelago.

Looking ahead to the next few days, unsettled weather is expected to continue. Strong northerly winds will dominate, with particularly powerful gusts forecast on the peaks of Tenerife, Gran Canaria and La Gomera. However, weather models suggest that the most intense winds should begin to ease from the second half of Thursday.

Residents and visitors are advised to remain cautious, especially when travelling on foot or by car during periods of heavy rain, and to stay informed about local weather warnings.
