Storm Oscar leaves its mark in La Palma and the north of Tenerife

Storm Oscar left its mark in the Canary Islands yesterday (Tuesday), with the highest accumulated rainfall and the strongest gusts of wind in all of Spain recorded in La Palma and Tenerife.

According to the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) the most rain was recorded at the Roque de Los Muchachos weather station in La Palma with 72.6 litres/m2, followed by 46 litres/m2in El Paso, and 44.6 litres/m2 in El Pinar, El Hierro.

As for the wind, the strongest gusts of 95km/h were recorded in Izaña, in the north of Tenerife, at 7:40am, and in Roque de los Muchachos, in La Palma, at 11:20am.

They were followed by the stations of Sabinosa (El Hierro), with 91 km/h; Alto Igualero-Vallehermoso (La Gomera), with 89km/h; Las Cañadas del Teide (Tenerife), with 85km/h; Arico (Tenerife), with 80km/h; Puntagorda (La Palma), with 80km/h; La Palma airport, with 74km/h; Tarifa (Cádiz), with 73km/h; and Agaete (Gran Canaria), with 72km/h.

In addition, the tenth lowest temperature of the day was recorded at the Roque de los Muchachos weather station in La Palma, which was 6.5°C at 5:10pm.

More rain is forecast for today (Tuesday) in the western islands, particularly Tenerife and La Palma again, plus AEMET are warning of thunderstorms in the south of Tenerife this afternoon. It’s going to be a humid day with temperatures still around 27 and 28°C and clouds in most areas.

Five of the Canary Islands, i.e. all except Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, still have active yellow and orange weather warnings for rain and strong gusts of wind for today (Wednesday).
