AENA has confirmed the cancellation of 20 flights in the Canary Islands due to the impact of Storm Nuria, which has brought extremely strong winds and heavy rainfall to several of the islands already this morning.
Of the affected flights, 17 were inter-island flights scheduled to depart from or arrive in La Palma, which is under Red Alert on the east side of the island where the airport is located, as well as one round-trip flight also cancelled in La Gomera, plus one from Madrid and another, originating in Luxembourg, has been diverted to Fuerteventura.
The islands of Tenerife and La Palma have been placed under maximum weather alert this Thursday, with wind gusts reaching up to 130 kilometres per hour. The rest of the archipelago remains on yellow alert as well, with winds expected to exceed 70 kilometres per hour in many areas.
As a precautionary measure, schools have been closed in La Palma, Tenerife, and La Graciosa. Authorities are warning of continued intense rainfall throughout the day across several parts of the islands, urging residents and visitors to exercise caution if going out.
