The Government of the Canary Islands, through its Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared a new pre-alert for storms across the archipelago starting at 3:00am tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 22nd January), alongside a pre-alert for rain beginning at midnight tonight.
The latest forecasts are for weak to moderate thunderstorms with occasional intense downpours and the possibility of some hail. There is also a chance of some isolated electrical storms with thunder and lightning accompanied by heavy rain and strong winds, sporadically throughout the islands.
Rainfall is expected to be light to moderate and unevenly distributed across the region. Persistent precipitation is likely in certain areas, particularly in the northern and western parts of the archipelago, with the potential for strong, stormy showers.
There is also the possibility of snow above 2,000 metres La Palma and Tenerife.
Additional Pre-Alerts
These new warnings are in addition to pre-alerts for wind and coastal phenomena issued earlier this week.
AEMET Activates Yellow Alerts
AEMET has issued yellow alerts for rain, thunderstorms, and coastal phenomena across all Canary Islands for Wednesday, 22nd January. The rain could reach 15 litres per square metre in one hour, particularly in northern and northwestern areas, as well as in the highlands.
The sea conditions will also deteriorate, with combined waves reaching 3–5 metres. Winds from the southwest and west, force 4 to 5 (locally 6), will gradually shift to a northerly direction and decrease in intensity by the second half of the day. Strong swells with waves of 2.5–4.5 metres are expected.
Residents and visitors are urged to remain vigilant and follow safety guidelines as these adverse weather conditions unfold.
