The Guardia Civil have arrested a resident of Tenerife after more than 25 kilograms of cocaine were discovered hidden in a sophisticated compartment of his car during a routine ferry inspection in Gran Canaria.
The search took place at the Nelson Mandela dock in the Port of Las Palmas by the Customs and Special Taxes administration, after the man had just arrived from Arrecife (Lanzarote) on a ferry.
His car was stopped for inspection and a trained sniffer dog from the Guardia Civil’s Canine Unit detected the presence of drugs, prompting officers to investigate further.
They discovered a concealed, electronically operated compartment containing 21 rectangular packages. Tests confirmed the substance was cocaine, with a total weight of 25.60 kilos and a street value of at least €1.5 million depending on its purity.
The driver was arrested on suspicion of a public health offence in the form of drug trafficking. Both he and the seized drugs were handed over to the duty court in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where a judge ordered his immediate imprisonment.
The confiscated cocaine has been sent to the Sanitation Department of the Government Subdelegation in Las Palmas for analysis to determine its exact type and purity level.
