The Canary Islands are facing another bout of hazardous sea conditions this week, with new yellow alerts issued by the Spanish Met Office. Six islands have active warnings today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday), as powerful north-westerly swells bring waves of 4 to 5 metres to most coastlines.
Authorities have not ruled out extending the alerts if conditions worsen in the following islands:
Tenerife
Yellow alert for heavy seas from 3:00am on Wednesday until 12:00pm on Thursday. The warning covers the north coast and the metropolitan area, where combined north-westerly seas of 4–5 metres are expected.
Gran Canaria
Yellow alert from 6:00am on Wednesday until 12:00pm on Thursday. Affects the northern coastline with combined seas of 4–5 metres.
Lanzarote
Yellow alert from 6:00am on Wednesday until 12:00pm on Thursday. Applies to the whole island with forecast waves between 4 and 5 metres.
Fuerteventura
Yellow alert from 8:00am on Wednesday until 12:00pm on Thursday. The warning covers the whole island, where combined north-westerly seas of 4–5 metres are likely.
La Palma
Yellow alert from 12:00am (midnight) on Wednesday until 10:00am on Thursday. Applies to the east and west coasts, with 4–5 metre north-westerly combined seas forecast.
El Hierro
Yellow alert from 3:00am on Wednesday until 10:00am on Thursday. The entire island is included, with expected combined seas of 4–5 metres.
Residents and visitors are advised to exercise caution along affected coastlines, avoid risky shoreline activities such as taking selfies or videos to close to dangerous areas, observe warning flags on all beaches and bathing areas, and follow updates from local authorities as the situation evolves.
