Eurocontrol, the European organisation for the safety of air navigation, have warned this morning of ‘significant’ flight delays at privately run air traffic control towers today because staff are going back on strike demanding better working conditions.
According to their notification, flights to and from the Cesar Manrique Airport in Lanzarote are particularly forecast to be affected, repeating the problems that travellers experienced last time they took strike action.
Air traffic controllers from Saerco are striking today demanding the negotiation of a new collective agreement for pay increases and working conditions to reflect the responsibility of their profession.
Strike action has been taking place over several months so far, with no agreement reached, and although AENA have covered as many positions as possible, there have still been disruptions for holidaymakers with many delays and even some cancellations.
Although most flights affected are inter-island, because international ones take priority, you are advised to check the status of your flight before travelling and be aware that you may have a lengthy delay.
