A legal battle has erupted between Siam Park, Tenerife’s world-renowned water park, and Gasificadora Regional Canaria, the company managing the gas distribution network beneath the site. The dispute centres on claims of safety risks and the alleged illegality of the gas pipelines that supply propanised air to Costa Adeje.
According to a report by Gasificadora Regional Canaria, damage caused by recent construction work at Siam Park has compromised the underground system, posing what it calls a “high risk to public safety.”
The company says the issues were detected in December 2024 and reported to Siam Park, the Adeje Town Hall, and the Regional Department of Industry. After receiving no corrective measures, the firm began a project to reroute the pipelines outside the park’s grounds.
Loro Parque Group Hits Back
However, Grupo Loro Parque, owner of Siam Park, has strongly rejected the claims. In a statement to Atlántico Hoy, the company’s legal team argued that Gasificadora Regional Canaria, as the owner and operator of the network, is solely responsible for its safe maintenance and for obtaining the required permits.
The group insists that Siam Park has not carried out any works that could have caused damage, and instead accuses the gas company of operating an illegal network. According to Loro Parque, the pipelines violate local planning regulations, as the land is classified for recreational and leisure use, allowing only installations necessary for the park’s operation, not for supplying gas to third parties.
Legal and Urban Planning Dispute
Citing this alleged breach, Loro Parque has asked Adeje Town Hall to restore urban planning legality and declare the gas distribution network unlawful. The company has also filed civil proceedings against Gasificadora Regional Canaria, seeking to terminate the 2008 contract under which the gas system was originally installed.
That contract, approved by the then Regional Directorate of Energy, allowed the gas company to build a propane-air mixing plant within Siam Park’s grounds. The pipelines, installed beneath the park and passing under the TF-1 motorway, currently supply gas to parts of Costa Adeje.
Loro Parque maintains that it has repeatedly reported the issue to both the Canary Islands Government and Adeje Council, and claims that local technical reports confirm the network’s non-compliance with urban planning rules.
Authorities Pass the Buck
When approached for comment, the Adeje Council declined to intervene, arguing that the matter falls under the competence of the Department of Industry. Yet, the Department of Economy, Industry, Commerce and the Self-Employed told Atlántico Hoy that it has received no formal complaints from either party and does not consider the issue within its remit. Instead, it pointed to the Department of Energy, now part of the Ministry for Ecological Transition, which has not yet responded to requests for comment.
As the row continues, questions remain over the safety and legality of the gas infrastructure running beneath one of Tenerife’s most popular tourist attractions, and over who is truly responsible for fixing it.
