The Canary Islands’ Ministry of Education have announced the closure of all schools tomorrow (Thursday) in Tenerife, La Palma and La Graciosa, due to the severe weather conditions associated with Storm Nuria.
The move follows the declaration of a state of maximum alert for strong winds and a coastal alert issued by the Directorate General for Emergencies under the Ministry of Territorial Policy, Territorial Cohesion and Water.
Educational activities will shift to remote learning, where feasible, with teaching staff permitted to carry out their duties from home provided they have the necessary resources. In cases where remote learning cannot be implemented, lessons will be suspended.
The alerts, which take effect from midnight tonight, come in response to worsening forecasts linked to the storm, which is expected to bring hurricane-force gusts and dangerous sea conditions throughout the archipelago.
The Ministry confirmed that any changes to the alert status will be communicated through official channels. School management teams are also required to report any issues to their respective regional inspection offices if conditions prevent the safe resumption of classes on Friday, 4th April.
Authorities continue to urge residents and visitors to exercise extreme caution as Storm Nuria advances across the region.
