A Ryanair flight from Edinburgh to Tenerife South was forced to declare an in-flight emergency yesterday morning (Tuesday), after issuing the international 7700 distress code for reasons that have not yet been confirmed.
According to data from Flightradar24, the aircraft departed from Edinburgh at 6:07am, but soon after take-off, it transmitted the 7700 emergency signal — a universal code indicating a serious incident or technical issue requiring immediate attention.
The flight subsequently changed course and returned safely to Edinburgh Airport.
Air traffic controllers confirmed that the flight did not continue its journey to the Canary Islands, though the nature of the emergency remains unclear at this stage.
The 7700 code can be activated for a range of situations, including medical emergencies, technical faults, or other critical onboard incidents. Ryanair has not yet released an official statement regarding the event.
