Residents of Amarilla Golf, in the south of Tenerife, are calling on the San Miguel de Abona council to step in after years of problems caused by a municipal plot being used as an unofficial parking area for motorhomes and campervans. Locals say the issue has been ongoing since 2022 and gets much worse during holidays and weekends.

The plot sits in the middle of a residential and tourist area, surrounded by private homes and two recently built five-star aparthotels. Residents say it has no basic services, no running water, electricity, or proper waste facilities, creating hygiene issues and making daily life more difficult for those living nearby.

Noise, clutter, and disruption

Locals report that dozens of motorhomes staying there create regular noise from outdoor activities and loud music. They also complain about people setting up tables, chairs, and other furniture in public areas, as well as pets roaming freely. They argue this is completely out of place for an area that markets itself as an upmarket tourist destination.

Not allowed under planning rules

According to current urban planning rules from the Ayuntamiento de San Miguel de Abona, the plot is officially intended for community facilities, not for camping or living in vehicles.

Residents say the current situation looks like an unregulated campsite, which would normally require proper management, infrastructure, and safety measures that simply do not exist here.

They also worry that the lack of control could leave the council responsible if there were a safety issue or a health emergency.

Residents say they have filed many complaints, both written and online, but claim the council has taken no action. They point out that there are other municipal plots further away from homes that could be used instead, yet the Amarilla Golf site continues to be occupied.

Calls for a proper solution

Neighbourhood groups want the council to review the situation urgently and create a clear plan that fits with the area’s high-quality tourism image. They say the current situation is harming both local residents and tourists visiting the south of Tenerife.

So far, locals say they have received no official reply from the council, despite raising concerns for nearly four years. They warn that continued inaction is damaging the area’s quality of life and reputation.
