After confused weather with a calima, rain, snow, and winds, over the last few weeks, rain will return to the Canary Islands this weekend with weather warnings activated by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) for strong winds and adverse sea conditions, due to the passage of an Atlantic front and the rise of an Isolated High-Level Depression (DANA) in the archipelago.
During Friday afternoon, Aemet has forecast that clouds will increase in the north of the islands with the greatest relief, and that some areas will have rain later today at altitude. In the rest of the islands, the skies will remain clear or slightly cloudy and temperatures will remain stable or experience a slight drop tonight.
However, the most significant thing about today’s forecast, are the occasional gusts of wind that will reach 60 kilometres per hour on the southeast and northwest slopes of the most mountainous islands.
This wind is set to increase tomorrow to 70km/h causing waves up to 5 metres high, and the weather warning that was activated earlier today in La Palma and Lanzarote has been extended to include Tenerife, La Gomera, and El Hierro tomorrow (Saturday), and then Gran Canaria on Sunday.
Light rain is forecast in various areas tomorrow morning, particularly in the north of the islands of greater relief; however, it will intensify and extend inland and to the south during the afternoon.
As for Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, which are flatter, cloudy intervals are expected tomorrow morning, which will leave weak but persistent rains. In the afternoon it will tend to clear up, the rains will return before the end of the day.
The good news is, that temperatures will hardly change on the south coasts.
More rain expected on Sunday:
Cloudy intervals are forecast in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, although there is only a low probability of weak rain in these two islands. However, in the more mountainous islands, the skies will remain cloudy with heavier showers in the morning, and during the afternoon the rain will back off but it will stay cloudy.
There will also be moderate to strong northeast winds, which will subside in the second half of the day.
