A one-month-old baby is recovering well after a dramatic late-night emergency in Vecindario, Gran Canaria, when the parents were guided step by step over the phone by a Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC) nurse. Together, they managed to save their child’s life before paramedics arrived.

The incident unfolded at around 10 pm on Wednesday, 3rd December, when 112 operators received a desperate call from the family reporting that their newborn had started choking. SUC coordinating nurse Víctor Manuel Suárez quickly realised, through his questions, that the baby had gone into cardiorespiratory arrest. With no time to lose, he calmly instructed the parents on how to carry out basic resuscitation, including chest compressions, keeping them focused until medical crews could reach the home.

Emergency services immediately sent three ambulances, two advanced life-support units and one basic unit, along with a doctor and nurse from the local health centre, who were rushed to the property by local police.

When the first responders arrived, they found the baby already crying and responding to touch, a sign that the parents had successfully brought the infant back. The newborn was then transferred to the Hospital Universitario Materno Infantil de Canarias for further care.

Nurse Suárez praised the parents’ remarkable composure, saying they followed every instruction clearly and without hesitation despite the terrifying situation.
