The Government of the Canary Islands has activated an official heatwave pre-alert across the archipelago today, as temperatures begin to soar and are expected to rise sharply in the coming days.
Tourists visiting the islands are strongly advised to follow safety recommendations and stay updated with official warnings.
According to the Spanish meteorological agency AEMET, maximum daytime temperatures are forecast to reach 38°C, particularly in inland and mountainous areas. The heatwave is expected to intensify and extend to all islands by midweek.
Gran Canaria Under Orange Alert from Wednesday
The island of Gran Canaria will move from pre-alert to full heat alert status tomorrow, Wednesday 6th August, at 10:00am, as temperatures are forecast to hit 37–38°C in elevated and inland areas. AEMET has issued an orange weather warning for high temperatures across the island, especially in the southern, eastern, and western midlands and highlands.
Authorities have also declared an alert for forest fire risk on the same day, due to extremely dry conditions.
Yellow Warnings on Other Islands
Meanwhile, the islands of Tenerife, La Palma, El Hierro, and La Gomera remain under a yellow warning for high temperatures, with expected highs of 34–36°C in some inland areas. Though conditions may be slightly milder in coastal resorts, health officials are urging both residents and tourists to remain vigilant.
Tourist Safety Tips During Heatwave
If you’re visiting the Canary Islands during this period, follow these simple tips to stay safe and comfortable:
- Stay hydrated – Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid peak sun hours – Limit sun exposure between 12:00pm and 4:00pm, especially during outdoor activities or excursions.
- Use sun protection – Apply high SPF sunscreen, wear a hat, sunglasses, and light clothing.
- Cool off regularly – Seek shade, enjoy air-conditioned spaces, or cool off with a swim—but avoid strenuous activity in extreme heat.
- Check on vulnerable individuals – Pay extra attention to young children, older adults, and people with medical conditions.
This heatwave episode is expected to continue through at least Thursday (August 7th), and possibly into the weekend. Authorities may escalate alerts depending on conditions, so stay tuned to the Canarian Weekly and official sources for updates.
