The Directorate General of Traffic (DGT) has announced the start of a new drink-driving campaign across Spain, including the Canary Islands leading up to the festive period.
The campaign, which starts today, Monday 16th December, will run until 22nd December and focuses on both vigilance and raising awareness about the dangers of driving under the influence of drink or drugs.
Campaign Details
The campaign is being led by Francisco José Ruiz Boada, Deputy Director of Mobility Management at the DGT, and involves random alcohol and drug tests at any time of the day and on all types of roads.
The timing coincides with the pre-Christmas period, a time traditionally marked by social gatherings and celebrations, including staff parties and family events.
Local police forces have been invited to participate, enabling more focused monitoring near areas where alcohol consumption is likely to occur. This collaborative approach aims to minimise risks and improve road safety during a high-traffic and high-risk period.
A Call for Responsibility
Previous campaigns at the same time of year have revealed concerning statistics, with 300 to 400 drivers testing positive for alcohol or drugs. The DGT is urging drivers to act responsibly and avoid driving under the influence. The message is clear: impaired driving poses a serious risk not only to drivers but to all road users.
Sobering Statistics
As of 12th December, a total of 1,093 people have lost their lives so far this year in fatal accidents on interurban roads, emphasizing the need for continued efforts to enhance road safety. The DGT’s campaign seeks to prevent further tragedies during the festive season by encouraging drivers to make safer choices.
The DGT advises drivers to plan their journeys carefully, use designated drivers, or rely on public transport to ensure a safe and joyous holiday period. Through this campaign, authorities hope to foster greater awareness and reduce the number of preventable road accidents.
