The State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) has issued an updated weather forecast for the Canary Islands for tomorrow, Monday 16th December, showing continued unstable conditions, including strong gusts of wind up to 100 km/h.
Temperatures are expected to rise to around 30°C in the western mid-altitude and coastal areas of Tenerife and the western the islands due to a light haze (calima) affecting the region,
Strong winds are expected to remain a prominent feature, with gusts potentially exceeding 90 to 100 km/h in higher altitudes and exposed northern and western slopes during the first half of the day.
The winds, primarily from the southeast, are forecast to weaken gradually towards the evening. In central high-altitude areas, the southwest wind may also reach very strong speeds in the morning.
In Gran Canaria there will be predominantly cloudy skies with medium and high cloud layers accompanied by a generally light haze, which could intensify in the afternoon. Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are also expected to experience similar conditions, with an increase in haze later in the day.
Temperatures across the eastern islands will follow the same upward trend, particularly in western areas. Gran Canaria's temperatures are anticipated to range between a high of 28°C and a low of 22°C.
Disruptions Caused by The Adverse Weather
This updated forecast comes alongside a series of precautionary measures and disruptions caused by the adverse weather. All schools are closed in El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife. Similarly, sporting and cultural events, including a football match between CD Tenerife and RC Deportivo and a concert by Jay Wheeler, have been postponed due to safety concerns.
