A man from Fuerteventura has fallen victim to an online investment scam, losing €23,000 after being lured in by a fraudulent advertisement on Instagram.

The scam took place in the municipality of La Oliva and is now under investigation by the Guardia Civil’s cybercrime unit, known as Equipo@.

The incident dates back to January, when a resident of Lajares reported to authorities that he suspected he had been defrauded. He explained that while browsing Instagram, he came across a highly convincing advertisement promoting an online investment platform, promising high returns in a short period with minimal risk.

Encouraged by the professional appearance of the advert, he clicked the link and submitted his personal information. He was soon contacted by people claiming to be professional investment advisors. Over a series of phone calls, they gradually gained his trust by offering friendly and detailed guidance.

Believing he was making a secure and profitable investment, the victim followed their instructions and made several bank transfers. However, it later became clear that the entire scheme was a deception, and none of the promised returns ever materialised.

The cybercrime specialists of the Guardia Civil launched an operation, codenamed “Majoma,” to trace the funds. Their investigation led them to a 62-year-old woman living in Madrid, who is believed to be the holder of the bank account that received the €23,000. She is now under investigation for alleged fraud and money laundering.
