Man makes up kidnapping story after crashing into a taxi in Gran Canaria

A 61-year-old man has been arrested in Gran Canaria by the National Police after allegedly fabricating a kidnapping story to avoid blame following a collision with a taxi in Las Palmas.

According to an official police press release issued on Friday, the man initially claimed that the two individuals travelling with him had kidnapped him, threatened him, and caused him harm.

Initially, the two passengers were arrested on suspicion of illegal detention, threats, coercion, and assault. However, after questioning all parties involved individually, officers determined that the claims were false, as the three people knew each other before the accident.

Further inquiries revealed that the suspect had been staying with the couple at a hotel in the south of the island. During the investigation, police also discovered documentation belonging to a Ukrainian citizen who had previously reported it stolen after suffering a minor assault.

As a result, the 61-year-old man was arrested for making false accusations and reports. He was later brought before the courts, with police confirming that he already has a criminal record.
