The Fuerteventura Cabildo has announced a major €8.6 million investment to improve mental health care services across the island, by providing more than 80 social and healthcare places for residents in need.
Cabildo President, Lola García, launched the tender process for the management of the future Insular Mental Health Residence, saying, “people remain at the heart of this administration’s priorities. This step responds to a long-standing demand from patients and their families for better care and support in the field of mental health”.
The new facility will initially offer 20 residential places, with plans to expand to 30, along with five additional spaces for emergency or short-term residential care to provide respite for families. The centre aims to offer comprehensive support, not only focusing on housing and care, but also helping them regain independence and build personal and social skills.
Also, the island’s two existing Day Centres for Psychosocial Rehabilitation, located in Gran Tarajal and Puerto del Rosario, each offer 20 places. These will be complemented by in-home support services and various forms of supervised accommodation.
The new contract will allow more than 50 professionals to provide care across the island’s mental health services. This team will include social workers, occupational therapists, support staff, carers, and educators. The Canary Islands Health Service will also continue to support the programme, providing key medical staff such as nurses, a psychologist, a psychiatrist, and a social worker.
