Man dies on a beach in the south of Tenerife from drowning

A 65-year-old man died yesterday afternoon (Wednesday) after being taken out of the sea by other bathers who saw him floating in the water because he was unconscious and showing signs of drowning in Playa de la Arena, which is in the municipality of Santiago del Teide in the southwest of Tenerife.

According to the Emergency Services Coordination Centre (CECOES) the incident took place at 6:50pm, which is when the 112 call centre received an urgent call for medical assistance for a man that had been retrieved from the water.

A lifeguard on the beach and two agents of the Local Police were on hand to help and found that he was in cardiorespiratory arrest so began to perform basic CPR manoeuvres with the help of a semiautomatic defibrillator until help arrived.

As soon as paramedics got to the beach, they assessed the situation and took over with advanced resuscitation manoeuvres to try and revive the man, but unfortunately, their attempts were in vain and they could only confirm his death.

The man’s body has now been taken for official identification and autopsy to confirm the cause of death.
