A man died yesterday afternoon, Sunday, 11th January 2026, after being rescued from the sea with signs of drowning at San Agustín Beach near Playa del Ingles, Gran Canaria, as reported by the Canary Islands Emergency and Security Coordination Centre (CECOES).

The emergency was triggered shortly after 5:00pm, when members of the public at the beach reported that an unconscious swimmer had been pulled from the water and was already receiving basic resuscitation attempts from bystanders.

Emergency services were immediately dispatched, including the San Bartolomé de Tirajana Beach Rescue Service, two units from the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), a medicalised ambulance and a basic life-support ambulance, Local Police and the National Police.

Upon arrival, SUC medical personnel found the man in cardiac and respiratory arrest. They continued advanced resuscitation efforts for several minutes, but despite repeated attempts, they were unable to revive him. The man was declared dead at the scene.

The National Police took custody of the body pending the arrival of judicial authorities and have opened an investigation to clarify the circumstances surrounding the drowning. No further details regarding the victim’s identity have yet been released.

This tragedy adds to the concerning number of drownings recorded across the Canary Islands in recent years, underscoring ongoing warnings from safety organisations about the importance of vigilance and caution in coastal areas.
