Golf del Sur, in the south of Tenerife has, not operated as originally planned for several years. Around 20 hectares of its golf course have remained inactive and abandoned since the COVID-19 pandemic, while some of the tourist developments that were intended for the area were never built. To address this, San Miguel Town Hall is processing a Special Urban Planning Programme (PAMU), which is now open to public consultation.
On 3rd September, Tenerife’s Environmental Assessment Commission (CEAT) announced the start of a 45-day public consultation. During this time, local authorities and residents can give their views on the new draft plan for Golf del Sur and its environmental study.
When Golf del Sur first opened, it had three nine-hole courses: North, Links, and South. But after the lockdown in 2020, management decided only the North and Links courses would reopen. The South course covers about 200,000 square metres and has remained closed and abandoned ever since, leaving a large empty space in the middle of a popular tourist and residential area.
The land was included in earlier planning projects in 2005 and 2015, which also allowed for hotels and sports facilities alongside the golf course. However, none of those projects were ever built, leaving a patchwork of land: some used for golf, some lying derelict, and hotel plots that have been vacant for 20 years.
The new Special Urban Plan (PAMU) aims to reorganise the whole area. It proposes keeping golf at the heart of the resort with one main course, a practice area, and a smaller “executive” course. It also reserves two plots for the hotels that were promised years ago but never constructed.
In addition, the plan sets aside space for events and leisure activities and confirms the land that must be handed over to San Miguel Town Hall for parks, green areas, and other public facilities.
Environmental studies show that, since the land is already urbanised, the impact will be minimal. The main measures required are dust and noise control during building work, plus relocating a few ornamental plants.
Once the consultation ends, CEAT will issue its environmental report. If it is favourable, San Miguel Town Hall can move forward with final approval. This would allow the long-awaited revival of Golf del Sur, bringing back part of the golf course, finally building the promised hotels, and adding new public spaces.
