The State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) has updated the weekly weather forecast, warning that most of Spain, including the Canary Islands, will be affected by Storm Laurence at least until tomorrow evening (Tuesday).
AEMET has issued an orange warning for coastal phenomena in the Canary Islands, while the regional government has declared an official state of alert, effective from today, Monday.
The sea conditions are expected to deteriorate significantly, with combined sea waves reaching heights of 4–6 metres. Around 15% of the waves will exceed the indicated height, with the maximum possible wave height estimated at between 8–12 metres.
Flood Risk in Coastal Areas
The Directorate General of Emergencies has also activated a pre-alert for coastal flooding in several areas of the archipelago, particularly along the northern and western coasts of El Hierro, La Gomera, Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, and northern Gran Canaria.
Looking ahead to Wednesday, AEMET forecasts that the Canary Islands will experience significant rainfall.
Additionally, meteorologists anticipate the formation of new Atlantic storms over the next few days, which are expected to bring further heavy rainfall, with the possibility of snow by Sunday.
Authorities urge the population to follow self-protection guidelines issued by the Directorate General of Emergencies to ensure safety during this period of adverse weather conditions.
