Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has activated official weather alerts for strong winds and coastal conditions ahead of severe weather expected to affect the Islands over the coming days.

The city council announced that the alerts came into force at 9:00am on Friday (12th December), following guidance issued by the Canary Islands Government’s Directorate General of Emergencies.

Municipal Emergency Plan activated

In a statement released through the Department of Security, Coexistence and Culture, the local authority confirmed that it has activated the Municipal Emergency Plan for Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (PEMULPA). This plan allows emergency services to respond quickly to any incidents linked to high winds or dangerous sea conditions.

The activation is being coordinated by the City Council’s Directorate General for Security and Emergencies, which will oversee preventive measures and emergency responses across the capital.

Strong winds and dangerous sea conditions expected

The alert covers both strong gusts of wind and adverse coastal phenomena, including heavy swell and rough seas. Coastal areas such as San Cristóbal, where strong waves have caused problems in the past, are expected to be particularly affected.

Authorities are urging residents and visitors to take precautions, especially near the coastline, harbours, promenades and exposed areas.

Advice for residents and tourists

The city council recommends:

  • Avoiding coastal areas during periods of heavy swell
  • Securing loose objects on balconies and terraces
  • Taking extra care when driving, particularly in exposed zones
  • Following instructions from emergency services and official channels

British residents and tourists are advised to stay informed through local news and official alerts, as conditions may change rapidly over the weekend.

Further updates will be issued if the alert level is raised or extended.
