Las Palmas Tourism Association backs visitor control measures at Roque Nublo

The Federation of Hospitality and Tourism Entrepreneurs of Las Palmas (FEHT) has expressed its support for the new visitor management measures implemented at the Protected Natural Area of Roque Nublo since 3rd February 2025.

These measures, introduced by the Gran Canaria Island Council, aim to ensure a high-quality visitor experience, promote sustainability, and protect the island’s valuable natural heritage.

Tourism industry representatives have pledged their full cooperation with the plan, following the council’s request for collaboration from Gran Canaria’s hotel and hospitality sector.

FEHT confirmed that staff at member establishments will inform potential visitors about the need to make a prior reservation when wanting to visit the Roque Nublo trail during peak hours (9:00am to 5:00pm).

The information provided to visitors will also highlight the lack of parking near the trail entrance. Instead, visitors will be advised to use alternative parking areas in Tejeda and Cruz de Los Llanos, along with the availability of a shuttle bus service.

FEHT has described the visitor access control at the Canary Islands protected natural areas as a "sensible decision" that ensures responsible management. "It strikes a balance between conserving environmental values and providing a satisfactory experience for both residents and tourists," the association stated.

Tackling Overcrowding Issues

The organisation also noted that congestion at popular sites like Roque Nublo has been a recurring issue in the Canary Islands. They believe it is the responsibility of the relevant authorities to address this, as the Gran Canaria Cabildo is doing in this case.

Additionally, FEHT has expressed its willingness to support the potential introduction of fees for services provided at natural sites, provided that the revenue is used to maintain these services and contribute to the conservation of the islands’ natural treasures.
