The Canary Islands government has signed a landmark agreement with leading tourism companies to ensure that tourism becomes a driver of environmental and social regeneration, rather than a threat to the natural environment.

The regional ministries for Tourism and Employment, and for Ecological Transition and Energy, together with a broad coalition of tourism businesses and organisations, formally established the Commission for the Regenerative Tourism Alliance at FITUR.

This working group will design RegNext, a new programme aimed at transforming tourism into an active catalyst for restoring the archipelago’s landscapes, habitats, and communities.

Major industry partners joining the initiative include TUI, Expedia, Jet2 and Jet2holidays, easyJet Holidays, DERTOUR, Barceló Hotel Group, Lopesan, Binter, and Loro Parque, as well as Canarian organisation Excelcan and tourism associations Ashotel, FEHT, Asolan, and Asofuer.

During the initial phase of RegNext, five pilot projects will be selected: one on each of the islands experiencing the greatest tourism pressure, plus a cross-archipelago social initiative. To deliver them, the commission will establish a voluntary, traceable, and transparent financing system that allocates funds directly to regeneration projects.

To ensure full transparency, participants will be able to track each project’s progress and review measurable environmental and social outcomes. These include emissions reductions, habitat restoration, species recovery, landscape improvements, green employment, and actions to alleviate poverty.
