LATEST: Spain’s State of Emergency Continues as Power Restored to Most Regions

Spain remains under a state of emergency this morning as recovery from yesterday’s (Monday) nationwide blackout progresses. While electricity has now been restored to the vast majority of the country, disruption continues in several regions.

Red Eléctrica, Spain’s national grid operator, confirmed that by 4:00am local time (3:00am Canaries), around 87% of the electricity supply had been restored. The cause of the outage, which struck suddenly and spread rapidly, has not yet been identified.

In Madrid, cheers broke out overnight as the capital’s lights came back on after hours without power. The city, along with Andalusia and Extremadura, has formally requested national assistance, triggering central government oversight under the emergency framework.

Officials say the state of emergency will apply only to those regions that request it. Spain's autonomous communities, while largely self-governed, can ask for direct intervention from the national government during major crises.

Despite early fears of sabotage or external interference, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said there is "no indication of a cyber-attack." A European energy trade body later told the BBC that the blackout appears to have stemmed from a technical fault in the electricity connection between France and Spain.

Authorities continue to urge caution as full service is gradually restored. Further updates are expected throughout the day.
