IGN reports three new earthquakes in the Canary Islands, one felt by the public

The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported the detection of three earthquakes in the Canary Islands today, Sunday, one of which was felt by the public in parts of Fuerteventura.

Details of the Earthquakes:

  • First Earthquake:
The most significant tremor, with a magnitude of 2.9 on the Richter scale, occurred just after 2:00am this morning in waters near Fuerteventura. Residents in the Valle de Santa Inés (Betancuria) and Villaverde (La Oliva) reported feeling the tremor. The quake originated at a depth of 13 kilometres.
  • Second Earthquake:
The second tremor, measuring 2.5 was detected at 1:19pm in close proximity to the first. It occurred at a shallower depth of 7 kilometres.
  • Third Earthquake:
The third seismic event was recorded at 4:07pm, north of La Palma and Tenerife, with a magnitude of 2.2 on the Richter scale. This quake originated at a depth of 40 kilometres.

The IGN continues to monitor seismic activity in the region, noting that such events are not uncommon given the Canary Islands’ geological activity. While the magnitudes were relatively low, the tremor near Fuerteventura serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in the area.
