The National Geographic Institute (IGN) has reported around 90 small earthquakes since Saturday (7th February), concentrated in the western sector of Las Cañadas del Teide, in Tenerife.

According to their reports, the seismic events occurred at depths of 10–12 kilometres and were mainly low-frequency pulses, with a few hybrid-type quakes appearing intermittently.

Experts emphasize that this area has experienced similar seismic episodes in previous years, noting that such behaviour falls within the normal dynamics of the Teide volcanic system. They emphasise that Tenerife is an active volcanic island and these processes form part of its natural internal activity.

Approximately 90 events have been recorded over the past three days, although specialists point out that overlapping seismic signals sometimes make exact counting difficult.

Among the most notable observations, the IGN highlights a seismic sequence on Saturday between 6:25pm and 7:00pm, along with a longer-lasting signal detected at 10:23am on Monday. These types of signals are typically associated with the movement of fluids at depth, an expected phenomenon in active volcanic systems.

No significant changes detected

Based on the current data, the IGN reports no evidence of any significant change in the state of the island’s volcanic system, ruling out any increased risk at this time.

Nevertheless, the agency continues its permanent monitoring of Tenerife’s seismic and volcanic activity and will closely analyse the evolution of these signals to identify any relevant changes.
