Human remains found in Tenerife thought to be a man who has been missing for a year

The possible remains of Ignacio Palmero Hijar, better known as Nacho, the 30-year-old Tenerife man who disappeared in Las Mercedes in the Anaga Rural Park over a year ago, have been found this morning on the Las Hiedras trail. On August 16th, the search intensified after two teenagers flying a drone found a backpack with his belongings, which had fallen in an area of difficult access, according to the National Police.

However, despite the fact that everything indicates that it is Nacho who disappeared on 14th July 2021, but the police are keen to point out that it will take a forensic report to confirm the identity of the remains officially.

The discovery of Nacho’s backpack, which contained several cans of food, a sleeping bag, and his wallet, in which his documentation was kept, became a key piece in order to start a search on the ground in Las Mercedes again, which has resulted in today’s discovery.

His mother, Lola (Dolores Hijar), has never accepted the police hypothesis that her son committed suicide by jumping in the sea or something similar, and has been tirelessly searching for answers, saying “if he wanted to kill himself, he would have gone to a ravine, not a mountain full of vegetation, and wouldn’t have taken food and a sleeping bag with him”.

The fact that the boys found his belongings on a hillside located between Pista de las Hiedras and Los Batanes, has reaffirmed her theory that Nacho did not disappear on purpose.

The operation is now underway to retrieve the remains so that they can be analysed by the forensic department and officially identified.
