Huge increase in tourists and flights to the Canary Islands this winter

The Canary Islands are set to experience a surge in tourists this winter, thanks to an increase in available flight seats. Airlines have scheduled over 9.1 million seats for flights to Gran Canaria, a 6.1% increase from last year, and 7.9 million seats to Tenerife South Airport, representing a 6.5% rise, according to data from AENA.

The winter season, officially starting on October 27th and running through to March 29th, 2025, will see a significant increase in commercial flight operations across Spain. Nationally, 134.2 million seats have been scheduled to Spanish airports, a 5.6% increase over last winter, with approximately 765,000 flights expected.

Boost to National and International Tourism

The rise in flights to Gran Canaria and Tenerife, two of Spain's premier tourist destinations, will cater to both international and domestic visitors from mainland Spain, positioning the Canary Islands as a key destination for winter tourism.

Other Spanish airports, including Alicante-Elche and Palma de Mallorca, will also see significant increases in seat availability, up 12.8% and 5.4%, respectively.

Growth in Key Markets

Internationally, the European market leads the way with nearly 73 million seats, up 6.5% from last winter. The Asia-Pacific region, however, shows the largest percentage growth, with a 51.9% increase, providing over 924,000 seats.

This expanded air service not only benefits tourists but also Canary Islands residents, offering improved connectivity for both leisure and business travel. The increase in flights enhances access to international and national destinations, making the islands a more convenient travel hub.

A Leading Winter Destination

Other airports across Spain, including Menorca, Badajoz, and Granada, are also seeing substantial increases in available flights, with growth rates of 23.1%, 18.7%, and 14.8%, respectively.

With these developments, the Canary Islands are cementing their position as one of the most attractive winter tourist destinations in Europe, with ongoing growth in flight availability further solidifying their leadership in the tourism sector.
