How much do tourists spend on holiday in the Canary Islands?

The latest data released today shows how much holidaymakers spent in 2022 in the destinations of the Association of Tourist Municipalities of the Canary Islands (AMTC), which was 15% more than in 2019, the year before the pandemic which is used as a reference to measure the recovery of Tourism. This meant that the average cost per stay went from 1,157 euros in 2019 to 1,331 euros last year.

This was announced by the president of the Association, José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, at the presentation of the AMTC stand in the latest edition of Fitur, based on data from the Canarian Institute of Statistics (ISTAC) between January and November 2022, which were of 1,331 euros.

These data exceed those of the Canary Islands as a whole: 1,122 euros in 2019 compared to 1,314 euros in 2022, taking into account that the 13 municipalities of the AMTC hosted 98% of overnight stays last year, which totalled more than 85 million.

The 2023 Canary Islands Situation report, published in February by BBVA Research, confirmed the recovery of tourism spending and its differential impact in the Canary Islands. In 2022, prices and revenue per available room were 14% and 13%, respectively, above the values of 2019.

"Part of this increase is due to costs, but another part could have favoured a greater profitability, helping to clean up the financial position of the sector,” the report said.

The analysis stated that "although in the whole of 2022, overnight stays and the degree of occupancy have not yet reached pre-pandemic levels, the hotel sector on the Islands has already recovered."

The significant increase in spending is also observed municipality by municipality, with some exceeding 1,500 euros per stay:
