The Government of the Canary Islands, through the Directorate General of Emergencies, has declared multiple alerts and pre-alerts across the Archipelago due to the arrival of Storm Claudia, which is expected to begin affecting the islands from today, Wednesday, 12th November.
Rain and flood alerts
An alert for heavy rainfall will come into effect from 3:00pm this afternoon across all islands. The storm, currently positioned southwest of the British Isles, will bring a cold front moving from west to east, progressively impacting the region.
Rainfall is forecast to be moderate to persistent, with localised downpours that could be very heavy, particularly in La Palma, El Hierro, La Gomera, and Tenerife, where accumulations could reach 20–30 litres per square metre in one hour and up to 50 litres in 12 hours.
The government has also issued an alert for potential flooding, especially in urban areas and ravines prone to overflow, due to the risk of torrential rain and water accumulation.
Strong winds across the islands
A wind alert has also been declared for the entire Archipelago. Southwesterly gusts could reach or exceed 70–90 km/h in the mountain areas of Tenerife and the western islands, and in the highlands of Gran Canaria.
The strongest winds are expected between Wednesday afternoon and early Thursday, with moderate to strong winds also affecting coastal and mid-altitude areas.
Thunderstorms and coastal warnings
A pre-alert for thunderstorms remains in effect throughout the Canary Islands, with the most intense storms expected between 3:00pm and 11:00pm in Tenerife and the western islands, later spreading overnight to Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, and Lanzarote. These may include lightning and occasional hail.
The Government has also maintained a pre-alert for coastal phenomena, warning of waves between 2.5 and 4 metres, combined seas from the west, and strong southwesterly winds offshore.
Residents and visitors are urged to take extreme caution, avoid swimming on open beaches, and stay away from promenades and breakwaters.
Wednesday’s forecast in detail
According to the Spanish Meteorological Agency (AEMET), persistent rain and thunderstorms will begin around midday in La Palma and spread to the other western islands in the afternoon.
In Tenerife, rainfall may be heavy, accompanied by very strong gusts in higher areas.
In Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, and Fuerteventura, skies will be mostly clear in the morning, with light to moderate rain possible inland later in the day.
Temperatures are expected to rise slightly, while southwesterly winds will strengthen throughout the day, particularly in mountainous regions.
