Government issues alert for the risk of forest fires in the Canary Islands

The General Directorate of Security and Emergencies of the Government of the Canary Islands has declared an alert for forest fires from 7:30am on Sunday (August 21st), on the islands of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, El Hierro, La Gomera, and La Palma.

The alert has been declared because the expected weather conditions fall into the parameters set by the Special Plan for Civil Protection and Emergency Attention for Forest Fires in the Canary Islands (INFOCA), which puts the emergency services on official standby during this time.

The General Directorate adds that the combination of the high temperatures and lower humidity have led to the alert, although the winds are forecast to be less than 30km/h, which is the limit for a full alert.

They have also informed that convective activity is expected in Las Cañadas de El Teide in Tenerife, which would lead to the formation of large-scale pyrocumulus clouds and result in rain or even local storms in the National Park.
