The Directorate General of Emergencies has declared a pre-alert for coastal phenomena across parts of the Canary Islands from 07:00 this morning (Tuesday) due to worsening and dangerous sea conditions.
The measure follows information provided by the State Meteorological Agency (AEMET) and other sources, under the framework of the Canary Islands’ Specific Emergency Plan for Adverse Meteorological Risks (PEFMA).
According to AEMET, the sea will be in poor condition, with combined waves between 2 and 3.5 metres, strong swells, and a northerly to north-westerly ground swell of 2–3 metres.
Areas affected
The pre-alert applies to:
- The north and east coasts of El Hierro and La Gomera
- The northwest and northeast coasts of La Palma
- The north and southeast coasts of Tenerife
- The coastline of Gran Canaria (except San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán)
- The coasts of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
Safety recommendations
Authorities are urging the public to take extra care and to follow official guidance, which includes:
- Avoiding piers, breakwaters, and areas where waves crash forcefully.
- Not taking photos or videos close to dangerous shorelines.
- Avoiding fishing in risky coastal zones.
- Refraining from swimming at remote or unfamiliar beaches, and at any beach where the red flag is raised.
- In the event of falling into the sea, do not swim against the current.
Residents and tourists are advised to stay updated on official weather reports and to exercise caution near the coast until conditions improve.
